How Sleep Cycles Work
Sleep isn't one flat state — it moves in waves. Each night you cycle through several distinct stages roughly every 90 minutes, and a full night of rest typically contains 4 to 6 complete cycles. Waking at the end of a cycle (instead of in the middle of deep sleep) is the single biggest reason you sometimes wake groggy and other times wake refreshed on the same total hours.
The Three Sleep Stages
A single 90-minute cycle is made up of three phases, each playing a different role in recovery:
- Light sleep (N1 & N2) — the gateway into sleep and the largest chunk of the night. Heart rate and body temperature drop, and your brain begins consolidating memories from the day.
- Deep sleep (N3, slow-wave) — concentrated in the first half of the night. This is when your body repairs tissue, releases growth hormone, and clears metabolic waste from the brain. It's the hardest stage to wake from.
- REM sleep — most abundant in the second half of the night. Eyes dart, dreams intensify, and the brain processes emotion, creativity, and complex learning. Your voluntary muscles are paralysed so you don't act out dreams.
Why 90-Minute Cycles Matter
Most adults need 5 to 6 full cycles (7.5–9 hours) to feel fully rested. It's also smart to allow about 15 minutes to fall asleep — this calculator adds that buffer automatically to every recommendation. Targeting a cycle boundary is why "six and a half hours" can leave you more tired than "seven and a half": the latter lands you at the gentle end of a cycle.
